roswell park cancer instituteRoswell Park Cancer Institute

About them: Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), America's first cancer center founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park. RPCI is the only upstate New York facility to hold the National Cancer Center designation of "comprehensive cancer center" and to serve as a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Over its long history, Roswell Park Cancer Institute has made fundamental contributions to reducing the cancer burden and has successfully maintained an exemplary leadership role in setting the national standards for cancer care, research and education.

The campus spans 25 acres in downtown Buffalo and consists of 15 buildings with about 1.6 million square feet of space. A new hospital building, completed in 1998, houses a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment center. In addition, the Institute built a new medical research complex and renovated existing education and research space to support its future growth and expansion.

lungevity foundationLungevity Foundation

About them: LUNGevity Foundation was founded by seven Chicago-area lung cancer
survivors in November 2000 to increase funding for lung cancer research.

Upon being diagnosed with lung cancer, these individuals learned that while tremendous progress had been made in detecting and treating many of the deadliest cancers over the last two decades, little progress had been made to save the lives of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer. This slow progress was due, in great part, to a lack of funding for lung cancer research. While funding for breast, prostate and colorectal cancer research had grown exponentially over the years, there had been no corresponding growth for lung cancer research.

Since its inception in November 2000, the Foundation has committed to co-funding more than $5 million in innovative lung cancer research projects at the foremost cancer programs in America. LUNGevity Foundation partners with the American Cancer Society Illinois Chapter, American Lung Association, American Thoracic Society, Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships, and The CHEST Foundation (the philanthropic arm of the American College of Chest Physicians) to make its research awards.

jill lamb foundationThe Jill Lamb Foundation

About them: In August 2008, I started the Jill Lamb Foundation in honor of my friend Jill who lost her 5-year battle with breast cancer.  The organization is designed to assist families with breast cancer through financial assistance and through the rendering of services.  Additionally, the organization conducts educational outreach on the risks of breast cancer and the various detection methods available.

Families dealing with breast cancer, such as mine and Jill's, should not have to worry about the little things that need to be taken care of.  Simple things like dinner or a clean house make a marked impact on their lives. JLF is designed to relieve some of those many burdens families face.

JLF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing support to families suffering from breast cancer and provide education on the risks of breast cancer and treatment options available.
